Recycling Attendant
The Recycling Attendant is a full-time position in the Department of Public Works and reports to the Sanitation Crew Lead and Highway Superintendent. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide accurate information and direction to residents regarding acceptable materials at the Residential Recycling Center. Hours are 10:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays during the Residential Recycling Center on season hours. Hours during the Residential Recycling Center’s off season (December through March) will be Tuesday through Friday 6:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Workdays may fluctuate and are required to be worked when the Residential Recycling Center is open with some weekend, holiday, emergency call-out duty and overtime work required.
Job Duties
- Open and monitor the Residential Recycling Center on all scheduled days. Close and lock the Residential Recycling Center on all scheduled days.
- The Recycling Attendant greets residents, verifies eligibility for site usage and enter details into a hand-held digital device, screens and categorizes vehicle loads, and provides direction to residents at the entrance gate.
- Directs traffic at drop-off sites.
- Assists the public in placing materials in proper containers; determines if waste is acceptable; sorts materials properly.
- Maintains containers to ensure adequate space for continued disposal and calls in collection requests as needed.
- Ability to make arithmetic computations.
- Operate a laptop computer and tablet and use asset management software for tracking daily work order information and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Perform essential job functions at a safe level with reasonable accommodation.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in general maintenance and perform routine maintenance tasks.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
- Ability to complete and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Knowledge of general safety rules and practices.
- Follows all Village policies and procedures, and Village codes and ordinances.
- Ability to communicate and interact in a professional and polite manner with Village residents and co-workers.
- Report any problems or concerns to management in a timely manner.
- Assist other departments in Public Works when Residential Recycling Center is in the off-season, as needed.
- Safely operates snow removal equipment.
- Safely operates loader for loading compost/wood chips for residents.
- Utilizes equipment for highway maintenance activities, including, but not limited to, chainsaw, router, brush chipper, and Vac truck.
- Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Public Works Department.
Educational, Certifications, and Experience:
- Must be age 18 or older.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Driver’s License; Commercial Driver’s License – Class A with air brake endorsements within one year of employment.
- Successfully complete and maintain 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher training.
- Successfully complete and obtain certification for First Aid – CPR training within six months of employment.
- Successfully complete and maintain Competent Person certification.
